Music Venue Lore and Tour, Plus Ghost Stories from Hotel Monte Vista
I arrived in Flagstaff planning for just a one-night stay, but before I knew it, I had become a month-long resident at the Hotel Monte Vista. (Yes, they offer extended stay discounts, and I’m definitely not the first traveler to fall under this town’s magnetic pull.) Flagstaff has a way of making you feel like you’ve belonged here all along.
The infamous Orpheum Theatre initially drew me to town, where I toured with former co-owner Chris Scully. He shared wild stories, like the night a band raged so hard they blew the lights mid-show—or the time someone crawled through the ductwork to sneak into the band’s green room!
Just a block away, the Monte Vista became my base, rich with musical history and charm. I stayed in both the Michael Stipe and Bing Crosby rooms and got to know Lindsay, a local artist and front desk clerk, who shared stories about Paul McCartney’s visit—and, of course, the chilling ghost stories the hotel is famous for. If you're up for it, dare to stay in the infamous Meat Man room!
When it’s time to finally hit the road, I leave with a deeper sonic kinship to this mystical town—and chances are, after listening and maybe even visiting Flagstaff yourself, you might feel the same.
