Underground music venues that march to the beat of their own drum, venues where community matters most and each moment is visceral. And if these places sound kind of too good to be true, it's because they kind of are. They're often at risk of disappearing with gentrification threatening their existence. That's why sharing their stories here is so important.

happy top | athens, ga

Analog music venue and recording studio. And the best part? You can sleep there too.

TRANSCRIPT

Picture
When T.S. Woodward, the owner of Happy Top, met me outside the house with a candelabra, I knew it was going to be an interesting experience. My daytime tour of the century-old house, once a rest house for train-hopping mill workers, revealed an analog music studio and performance space with cozy, functional, and vintage aesthetics. You'll hear about the origins of the house, Woodward's approach to decoration and design, and reminisce about the time Cookie Tongue, an avant-garde puppeteering band, performed using a signal flow speaker system where each room of the house had a different audio flavor. Plus, T.S. shares passionate thoughts on why Athens, GA has such a special music scene.

If you ever travel to Athens, this is the place to stay.

T.S Woodward would like to personally thank Michael Smith-Lanzar (his next door neighbor from 2019-2022 [but resident there since 2014]) who was the first person he met on Bryan St, told him all about the history of Happy Top, helped to negotiate with the city the sewer/water infrastructure & who is an indefatigable activist for human rights.

the loft | boston, ma

A super secret place that only people who love live music know about.

TRANSCRIPT

On the outskirts of Boston, a warehouse comes alive on a frigid night. Artists and bohemians huddle together, drawn by live music in one of the city's best-kept secrets. Journey to The Loft, a DIY rehearsal and performance space that serves as a sanctuary for experimental sounds. We'll shadow Audrey Ryan, the venue's owner and talented musician, during her preparations and performance. We'll also spend time with local creatives to gain insight into the significance of this venue in a city grappling with the loss of artist spaces.
