SCOTT NEWTON: CAPTURING AUSTIN'S MUSIC LEGACY
Scott Newton has been photographing Austin's music scene for over 50 years. His journey began at the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1970 and led to his role as the official photographer for Austin City Limits since 1979.
Self-taught and deeply passionate, Newton's approach is rooted in a unique philosophy. Inspired by ancient Greek concepts, he seeks to capture what he calls "the Muse" in action - those transcendent moments when artists connect with a higher creative force.
This perspective allows Newton to photograph musicians at their most expressive, revealing the invisible energy that fuels great performances. He's captured legends like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, creating iconic images that define Austin's musical history.
Newton's work, featured in publications, books, and art displays across Austin, goes beyond documentation. His photographs showcase the spirit of live music, helping cement Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. A gallery of his work is prominently displayed inside the Austin City Limits Moody Theatre, offering visitors a visual journey through music history.

PUG SNORTS & MUSIC MYTHOLOGY
As Scott Newton greets me at the door with his pug, Slugga, my heart skips a beat. Having grown up with this smushy-faced breed, I instantly connect with Scott over our shared love for pugs. This common ground becomes an immediate icebreaker, setting the stage for a fun convo.
From pug snorts to music mythology, this podcast covers a wide range of topics. |
MAINE MADE MUSIC VIDEO: CASE STUDY FOR THE CREATIVE PROCESS
|
As a multimedia creator, making a music video is a rite of passage. Inspired by Bright Light Social Hour's "Sea of the Edge" and Maine's romantic autumn landscape, I collaborated with a small team of friends to bring my idea to life: two lovers rendezvousing at a lighthouse.

ABOUT THE BRIGHT LIGHT SOCIAL HOUR
Listening to The Bright Light Social Hour while driving around Downeast Maine sparked an idea for a music video. Within weeks, I was bringing that vision to life. Who is TBLSH you ask?
They're a five-piece powerhouse from Austin blending psychedelic rock with irresistible grooves and incredible songwriting. Known for their electrifying live shows and music videos crafted by filmmaker Oswaldo Flórez, this band is a must-see. If you love Tame Impala or White Denim, you'll be obsessed with them too. |
