TRANSCRIPT
In this episode, we jam up the coast of Maine and meet up with Jon Fishman, the drummer of PHISH, at his Radio Show in Belfast for a convo about memorable performances, venues, road tripping and his favorite Maine bands- we even get a studio caller!
The spirit of a road trip is strikingly similar to musical improvisation. As the music meanders, you can tune into yourself and allow thoughts to percolate. But before you know it, the tempo changes lanes and turns down a new rhythmic route. When we drive away from mundane, we stay alert and appreciative. We give a band the license to repetitively ramble in, wordlessly wander. And even though the band can be errant and sound seemingly lost. We know that they're following a music map to eventual jubilation. Proving that curiosity is a necessary component to having an unforgettable journey.
The red On Air Sign was glowing when I walked into the radio booth at WBFY 100.9 Community Radio Station in Belfast, Maine. Jon Fishman was sitting on a wing backed leather office chair which was tearing at the seams, talking about a Stevie Wonder Song he played and then riffing on it… The show is called The Errant Path, and it relates to his DJ style of meandering around the music and finding interesting connections between songs or musicians. He has been a music aficionado since high school, was even a DJ at Goddard College in Vermont, he just loves following connections and careers of musicians. This episode will make you listen to music in a new way and inspire you to invest more time in knowing the people behind the instruments.
