TRANSCRIPT
Meet up with award-winning Maine architect, Carla Haskell to visit The Grand Theatre, a historic venue in Ellsworth to talk about creating space and learn about her unconventional start in the field of architecture.
Creating Space from an Architect’s Point of View
When award-winning Maine architect Carla Haskell creates a space, she begins by getting a sense of the site’s views and wind direction and really taps into how the layout will flow. After the initial rough sketches are drawn, technical pieces are interwoven and the design evolves. Her process always starts from a place of feeling and she is known to jump out of bed in the middle of the night to capture her inspired solutions before the sun rises!

Covid Compliant Venue in the Making
The Grand is excited to bring back their beloved community and its visitors. During its year of closure, many facility improvements were made, but an air-handling system with A/C is at the top of their list. This important project is in the planning phase with specialists and bears a significant, albeit necessary cost to the venue.

A Cathedral in the Woods on Mount Desert Island
Terramor Outdoor Resort, located on Mount Desert Island, is a new KOA glamping experience built for digital nomads. Our guest, architect Carla Haskell recently designed the Grand Lodge, which has a modern and hip twist and will take your breath away. Haskell designed the lodge to connect with the outside and describes it as, “...my fantasy of my favorite summer places.” With west and east facing decks and a cozy screen porch with fireplace, Terramor’s guests will head home feeling elevated after a respite inside Haskell’s cathedral in the woods. And they can feel good about the locally-sourced white pine and hemlock used throughout.
